Recap: The "gospel" is sometimes distorted by the King's enemy to make it less effective and postpone its outcome, but he who has been defeated cannot change the reality of its outcome.
gospel as pictured in the Old Testament:
2 Samuel 18:19 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings (basar), how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies.
Read in context
Sample abstract: the "gospel" is ... news from the battlefield about the outcome of the war with the king's enemies
Sample Commentary:
The reasons why Joab declined to accept Ahimaaz' offer to bear intelligence of the victory to David, and afterwards let him go along with another, are variously stated by commentators--but they are of no importance. Yet the alacrity of the messengers, as well as the eager excitement of the expectants, is graphically described. -- Jamieson, Fausset and Brown

Sample abstract: the "gospel" is ... sometimes distorted to make it less effective.
Sample Commentary:
Learn hence that men, professedly pious, and apparently ardently attached to the gospel, may become soon perverted in their views, and alienated from those who had called them into the gospel, and whom they professed tenderly to love. The ardour of the affections becomes cool, and some artful, and zealous, and plausible teachers of error seduce the mind, corrupt the heart, and alienate the affections. Where there is the ardour of the first love to God, there is also an effort soon made by the adversary to turn away the heart from him; and young converts are commonly soon attacked in some plausible manner, and by art and arguments adapted to turn away their minds from the truth, and to alienate the affections from God. -- Albert Barnes
