Recap: The "gospel" is... the proclamation of peace and victory over the wicked, and sometimes is supplanted by a distorted message.
gospel as pictured in the Old Testament:
Nahum 1:15 Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings (basar), that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.
Read in context
Sample abstract: the "gospel" is ... proclaiming peace; ... proclaiming victory over the wicked.
Sample Commentary:
him that bringeth good tidings announcing the overthrow of Sennacherib and deliverance of Jerusalem. The "mountains" are those round Jerusalem, on which Sennacherib's host had so lately encamped, preventing Judah from keeping her "feasts," but on which messengers now speed to Jerusalem, publishing his overthrow with a loud voice where lately they durst not have opened their mouths. A type of the far more glorious spiritual deliverance of God's people from Satan by Messiah, heralded by ministers of the Gospel (Ro 10:15). -- Jamieson, Faussett, Brown

or another Gospel which ye have not accepted, or "embraced"; a better Gospel than had been preached by the apostles, and received by them; which contained more wholesome doctrines, more comfortable truths, more excellent promises, better tidings of good things, than those of peace, pardon, righteousness, life, and salvation, by a crucified Jesus; proposed a better scheme of things, more for the honour of the divine perfections, and for the comfort and safety of believers; and which laid a better foundation for faith and hope, and tended more to encourage true religion and powerful godliness:
